Inter Milan face Juventus in the first Derby d’Italia of the season on Sunday in what promises to be an exciting clash in the biggest game of the season so far
The Nerazzurri have made a fantastic start to the campaign as they have won all six of their Serie A games so far and sit top of the table with a perfect record.
They maintained their 100% record with a 3-1 win over struggling Sampdoria last weekend. They were however no match for a formidable Barcelona in midweek in the Champions League, losing 2-1 despite taking an early lead.
The hosts are the clear favourites of this tie despite coming up against last season’s champions. In their impressive journey under new manager Antonio Conte, they have scored 13 goals and conceded just two.
Coming up against the Old Lady, which he captained and coached for 17 years, Conte has set old allegiances aside and maintains that this is just a tie like any other in the league.
Juventus recorded a routine 2-0 win over SPAL in their last league match with Cristiano Ronaldo finding the net in his and the following 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
Despite some solid wins, Juventus are still unconvincing, especially away from home where they have averaged a goal per game whilst conceding Inter’s numbers.
Maurizio Sarri’s men, who are two points behind the leaders, have not been at their usual best of past seasons, beating Parma (1-0), Brescia (2-1) and drew 0-0 with Fiorentina on the road.
As such, the onus is on Sarri, still yet to win a major league title, to keep Juventus at the top.
Inter will be without the suspended Alexis Sanchez who was sent off in the over Sampdoria. In his absence the man to watch will be fellow summer signing Romelu Lukaku who is likely to pose a big threat to the opposition defenders.
Conte has handed a major boost after Lukaku was reported to have recovered from a muscle injury that kept him out of the loss to Barcelona.
The Belgian international has bagged 3 goals in 6 league games since he move from Manchester United, something he hopes to add to his tally
Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain are set to battle for a starting berth with both of them being used at the expense of the other in past matches alongside Cristiano in attack.
Juan Cuadrado is expected to continue at right-back, standing in for the injured duo of Mattia de Sciglio and Danilo while Alex Sandro played against Leverkusen and is available at left-back after a family emergency.
Aaron Ramsey coulb be recalled in the No 10 role in place of Federico Bernardeschi.
Matthijs de Ligt will continue alongside Leonardo Bonucci in central defence as Giorgio Chiellini remains sidelined with an ACL injury.
Head to Head:
Inter have failed to win the last 5 meetings with two draws and three Juve wins.
