Juventus begin their quest for European glory with a trip to Atletico Madrid in a heavyweight Group D encounter.
Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to continue his fine form against Atletico after dumping them out of last season’s competition with a sublime hat-trick. Ronaldo has netted 22 times against them in 31 matches during his time at Real Madrid.
The Serie A champions dropped points for the first time this season as they were held to a drab 0-0 draw away to Fiorentina. Atletico lost their 100% league in a surprise 2-0 loss to Real Sociedad although they remain top of La Liga.
Home advantage could once again prove crucial to the Wednesday match. Prior to that 3-0 loss in Turin, Atletico had beaten the Old Lady 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Los Colchoneros are however on a fine home streak winning 9 straight matches in European competition. Diego Simeone will look to return to momentum with marquee signing wonderkid Joao Felix expected to settle old scores.
Maurizio Sarri admitted his side was not up to scratch due to a general lack of fitness. Ronaldo will lead the attack alongside Gonzalo Higuain.
Juventus already have an injury crisis on their hands with regular starters Giorgio Chiellini, Mattia de Sciglio, Douglas Costa, Miralem Pjanic and Danilo all out for this fixture.
Head to head:
Atletico have won 2 of the past 4 meetings with one ending in a stalemate and Juventus winning the other
